Which communities will you speak for and about at the council table?
I have a varied career, I started out painting for my old man, then when I finished school I did pest control, bouncing and worked at m10 when it was across the road by Macdonalds. I love rugby, hunting, fishing and diving. I work for health nz now, but also run a small sole trader business where I take people outdoors and support them through difficult times.
I have relationships and experiences from my work and governance in Health, Education, Justice and social services that will allow my to represent a wide range of groups in our community, industries and work to find a balance that will protect our environment now and in the future.
What is the number one social and economic issue for the community and for the city? (DCC question). What is the key issue for the region at this time and for the next 10 years? (ORC question)
There are many important issues, but I think having hard working sensible people at the table will allow us to tackle them all.
For me though it is Water and economic growth and development which will allow us to thrive.
How will you elevate community aspirations? How will you know what they are? (DCC question only)
Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to maintain and improve opportunities for Māori to contribute to local government decision-making processes. How will you honour this obligation in your role with the Dunedin City Council/Otago Regional Council?
I am well aware of this aspect of the role, as a cultural educator for health nz I lead this work across the health sector in Southern, I also chair the kura board and have links to most of our Māori organisations, groups and services in the region. I will listen to the needs of Māori and work to help understand the priorities and how we can work together in a progressive way.
What is your usual approach to achieving collegial and constructive relationships with the people you work with? What is the most important element of a constructive working relationship?
I am transparent and caring, As a front rower I have always tackled things head on, mine is a direct approach, straight forward and to the point. I don’t waste words, I’m more of a doer. When I’m working with someone I like to come up with a plan, and get on with the job is my usual approach.
